Arnhem. 5 - 7th June

The main reason to visit Arnhem relates to the bridge.
In September 1944 the Airborne Division was dropped to the left of Arnhem to capture the bridge over the Rijn as part of a much larger plan to force the allied advance into the Netherlands and then northern Germany. It failed for many reasons, Antony Beavor's new book Arnhem explain all these, but fundamentally the army leadership was competing against each other and refused to listen to advice. The division dropped on Arnhem, including the parachute regiment, were some of the best allied soldiers. Their use in such a compromised plan wasted so many lives for very little gain.
