Vienna...4th July.

Walking away from the Postal Savings building into the old city, just to see rather than visit any specific buildings. This is where the tourists are.. there were only a small handful in the Postal Savings building....

Waiting for the corner to be re-built..Hopefully not like below....

Hmm..

The Aanker Clock built in 1914 to a hybrid Art Nouveau design.. The figures rotate on the hour..

St Stephen;s Cathedral

St Peters Catholic Church..
The Plaza Aperol completed in 1919 with the Pestsaule in the centre, a memorial to plague victims in the 17C

The Vienna Opera House...

By the time I had walked to the opera building, on the Ringstrasse, it was only a short walk to another Otto Wagner building; the Karsplatz subway station...on Lothringerstrasse, the main arterial road to the southwest of the city...

Two identical pavilions were designed for the new subway.. no longer used and now one is a museum and one a cafe. The subway was rebuilt in the late 60's/ 70's and these pavilions were to be demolished. After an outcry they were dismantled while the new subway was constructed.
They now sit on a plinth, 1500mm higher than the original ground level.
As there is no connection to the tracks, the steps down from the pavilions were not re-constructed, they feel a little lost on their plinth.. The cafe in one of the pavilions is not sympathetic to the original design or setting; there is a horrible well in front on the pavilion giving light to the new lower ground floor protected by a modern set of railings..

I may come back here to take better photos..

After a rest shaded by trees, I move on round the Lothringerstrasse to return to the apartment. This takes a sharp right to round around the Stadtpark, one of the city parks that also runs incorporates the Wienfluss..

The Stadtpark subway entrance...
The Wienfluss in its channel
Where the Wienfluss reappears from under the Lothringerstrasse

Back to the apartment... tomorrow I intend to look for a swimming pool....
