Finally leaving Vienna.. the time has gone so quickly and I feel I have scratched the surface of the city.. A city to return to..
After a week in the underground car park, the car felt fine.. but Julie was a little confused with the car park, a huge linear car park that runs under LandstraBer HauptstraBe, thinking the car was above ground rather than under... I could feel the rolling of the eyes again as I went past 'turnings' on the map..
Driving out of Vienna, west on the A1/E60, towards the mountains, the first climb was fine. Two things that I noticed pretty quickly; firstly the curves of the motorway were much tighter than in the UK, so eyes on the road rather than trying to look at the view and secondly going down hill, the gradient was much steeper..
Fairly soon, the motorway levels out and the views either side are fantastic with, on the left outlines of mountains and on the right hills similar to driving up the M6 through the southern part of the lake district.
I drive past Melk, situated on the Danube, dominated by Melk Abbey.
It also described by Patrick Leigh Fermor in his book too...

I decided to stop for lunch in Linz, a city I was intending to stay a night at, when planning my journey, but decided to spend an extra day in Salzburg. I also needed to do some reading so a very rare occurrence on my trip; I had lunch...

Surprise.....! |
Lunch over, back driving towards Salzburg, those mountains in the distance become ever closer and finally I arrive in the outskirts of Salzburg. There was an amazing building on the outskirts, a car showroom, that I need to photo in due course, but not reflective of the types of buildings in central Salzburg.
I have chosen an apartment outside the centre, on the edge between country and city.. Calling this place the suburbs would be a complete misnomer...
I went for a walk in the evening..
Seemingly at the end of the road is this..
At the very top runs the boarder of Austria and Germany. There is a cable car to the top.. this will save my foot....
